SAW 3D Premiere and Party

By John Raybin, reporting from Hollywood, California. 10/27/10

This was a wonderful and unforgettable day. It was special because it's SAW 3D day and special because SAW 3D is the final SAW film. This last movie is awesome!

My close friend, Costas Mandylor ("Hoffman"), picked me up in a limo to take me to the premiere and party. We laughed and had a great chat on our way to the event. For the last five SAW movies, Costas and I have hung out together, especially during filming in Toronto, and in Los Angeles and New York. We've had a blast together......You are going to love SAW 3D. It's a great movie with twists and turns that will astonish. The 3D is superb and you do feel like you are in the traps. Before the movie began, producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules and Director Kevin Greutert thanked Lionsgate, the crew, the actors and everyone involved with the SAW franchise. So many past and current stars and crew were in the audience, including all the SAW directors - James Wan, Darren Bousman, David Hackl and Kevin Greutert. Also there - past and current actors from the franchise...Shawnee Smith ("Amanda"), Tobin Bell ("Jigsaw"), Costas Mandylor ("Hoffman"), Cary Elwes ("Dr. Gordon"), Betsy Russell ("Jill" - Jigsaw's Wife), Tanedra Howard ("Simone"), Gabby West (SAW 3D), James Van Patten ("Dr. Hefner"), Leigh Whannell ("Adam") and many, many more...this film will satisfy every fan...the action is non-stop and the twists will blow you away. The party was held right near the famous Mann's Theatre (where the premiere was) at Level 3...great party, open bar, plenty of food, a SAW photo booth and SAW movie clips were played on giant screens....I spoke at length with Costas, Shawnee Smith, Leigh Whannell and Cary Elwes during the party...these are all friends that I've spent time with over the years in Toronto watching the SAW movies being made....Costas and other SAW actors are autographing special SAW 3D related memorabilia (go to: collectsaw.com and officialsawstore.com to see what's available)....This premiere was my favorite one of all the ones held since the beginning of the franchise, because I got to see so many SAW related friends. A great night for SAW 3D. Unforgettable night. Unforgettable and incredible - that's what I call SAW 3D.

An Interview with SAW 3D Director Kevin Greutert

Interview conducted by John Raybin of officialsaw.com, officialsawstore.com and collectsaw.com

I spent a lot of time on the set of SAW 3D, and I came away very impressed by the work of Director Kevin Greutert. He was as cool and collected on the first day of filming in Toronto, Canada, as he was on the last cold day of the shoot in April. Kevin is very passionate about the SAW films, and he has put his heart and soul into each of the movies -- he was the editor of the first five SAW films, he directed SAW VI, and now SAW 3D. Kevin's talent and dedication has had a tremendous impact on the SAW franchise, and he gave his all making the last SAW movie.

Below are some questions I posed to Kevin Greutert.

John: Is there a character in the SAW franchise that you identify with (most)?

Kevin: My favorite character is Amanda, because she's such a troubled soul, and so passionate, but I'm not sure I identify with her personally too much, not in my current life anyway. I'm very attracted to Jigsaw's love of complexity, and his rather dark view of the human condition. But I swear I've never killed anyone.

John: What are the challenges filming outdoors compared to shooting indoors in a controlled environment?

Kevin: It was freezing cold and often raining when we shot most of our exteriors for SAW 3D. We also shot at night, and at the end of our schedule, so the crew and I were dog tired when we suddenly started working from sun down to sun up. Sometimes you get a lot of local noise when you shoot on location, but we were pretty isolated so that wasn't a problem.

One of our traps was shot in a big public square in downtown Toronto. We shot half a day, then suddenly the rain began to really pelt us, so we had to send hundreds of extras home early. Also the sun was winking in and out from behind skyscrapers, which posed a major challenge for the lighting team. But we still managed to get the scene.

John: Sean Patrick Flannery and Chad Donella are two new faces that we will see in SAW 3D. They are also darn good actors! How do they impact the final SAW film?

Kevin: They both brought a tremendous amount of skill and passion to the project, and were very useful to me when it came to polishing the dialogue and the blocking (which is the positioning of the actors in the scene). I think they both enjoyed the physical demands of their parts, and the emotional intensity of their characters' experiences. We were all very pleased with what we'd done when we finished.

John: Does filming in Canada, with basically the same crew and many of the same cast for each movie, give you an edge? Does the family atmosphere assist you in making a great film?

Kevin: The Toronto crew brings an increasing amount of expertise to the SAW chronology every year. At this point everyone knows the narrative and characters very well, and it's fun to watch them debate the continuity of the storyline, the accuracy of props and wardrobe and makeup.

John: What's the harder job, being a director or an editor?

Kevin: Director! An editor is expected to do the best with the materials that he is given, while a director is expected to create miracles. Directors have to keep their eyes on all parts of the film making craft, business and human drama at all times. On the other hand, the challenges are what make directing a fascinating job.

John: What makes SAW fans so special?

Kevin: At this point I have met hundreds of SAW fans, and they don't fall into easy categories. Many are almost too young to watch the films without parental supervision, but some are middle aged, and occasionally even older. They come from all countries, ethnicities, and walks of life. On top of the love of being scared by movies, they tend to enjoy having fun with each other as well, whether they're sparring over arcane details of the series, dressing up like SAW characters, or just goofing around.

John: Favorite film of all-time (outside of SAW)?

Kevin: Like everyone, I have many favorites. They include: Aguirre, Wrath of God; Blade Runner; Giants and Toys; Beyond the Valley of the Dolls; Night of the Iguana; Doctor Zhivago; 2001; etc etc.

John: Favorite Director?

Kevin: Werner Herzog, David Lynch, David Lean, Wes Anderson, Yasuzo Masumura, Hayao Miyazaki, Ishiro Honda, Stanley Kubrick, Spike Jonze, John Boorman, Paul Thomas Anderson, Sergio Leone, Powell/Pressburger, etc etc etc.

John: Favorite Actor?

Kevin: Warren Oates, Klaus Kinski, Richard Burton, Joan Fontaine, Audrey Hepburn, Deborah Kerr, Oliver Reed, Alec Guiness, Daniel Day-Lewis, Keira Knightly, Paul Newman, Marlon Brando, James Cagney, etc etc etc.

John: As a director, do you have many regrets?

Kevin: Only that I wish I'd gotten my first job sooner.

John: Do you think the SAW films are misunderstood by critics?

Kevin: Often I read between the lines of a bad review and get the sense that the critic didn't even see the movie, or doesn't like horror films, or doesn't like gore. The SAW films have gotten plenty of good reviews, in any event, and they are respected by many within the film world, not only because they are financially successful, but because we have managed to make them for the same release time each year, and because the crew is so consistent.

John: It must be fun to be living your dream each day as a director of a legendary franchise?

Kevin: Being a director is the best job in the world, despite the very great challenges that come along with the career.

John: SAW 3D is the final SAW film. Why is it time to end?

Kevin: We would like to go out with a bang, not a whimper, so everyone has agreed to decree SAW 3D the final chapter. No one wants to see the series deteriorate in quality, as is often the case when something good goes on for too long.

John: Fifty years from now, how will the SAW films be remembered?

Kevin: Will anyone even be alive? If there is still electricity, it will probably best be used to create food, not playing films. But maybe I'll be surprised, and the series will be on its fourth reboot, starring Daniel Matthews' son!

The End of SAW

Fans have been bombarding our office with calls and emails since the major news broke last night!

SAW 3D will be the final film in the legendary franchise...As the news became official last night (7/21/10) and word spread to fans everywhere, Costas Mandylor ("Hoffman") and I toasted the SAW franchise at a Hollywood (California) hot spot. Costas starred in SAW III, SAW IV, SAW V and SAW VI, and he stars in the final film, SAW 3D. We fondly remembered all the great moments on and off screen, and we looked back on the last day of filming of the series 3 months ago. That emotional last day of filming was an all-night shoot...I'm so glad I was there to witness the final moments of filming....You will love SAW 3D!

Costas Mandylor ("Hoffman") - Part 2 of our Exclusive Interview

This is John Raybin from officialsaw.com with the 2nd of our 2-Part Exclusive Interview with Costas Mandylor ("Hoffman").

John: You are going to be meeting fans on the Wizard Comic Con Tour in different cities in North America. That will be fun.

Costas: Yes, it will be a lot of fun. I love meeting SAW fans, posing for photos with them and signing autographs. I know they’re showing the SAW props in each city on the tour as well. And SAW fans are the very best. They know every detail of every film. I am always stopped by SAW fans wherever I am and they always tell me something special about one of the SAW films. On the Wizard Comic Con Tour (wizardworld.com), I will be going to a bunch of cities over the next year in between my other projects and when I am not filming. I'll be in Toronto at the end of March (March 26, 27). These Wizard shows are very large and a lot of fun.

John: Will there be surprises at any of the shows?

Costas: There will be great surprises… and that’s all I can say! Come to the Wizard-SAW shows in the different cities to find out what I mean!

John: Does it feel good when fans stop you and recognize you as “Hoffman?”

Costas: Oh sure. It means the movies are having an impact, and they are. People know about SAW all over the world. And every fan I’ve met has been very kind and excited about the films. It’s a lot of fun for me to meet these people in person. They’re very special.

John: Out of all your scenes in the SAW movies, what's one of your favorites?

Costas: The scene when Jigsaw has me strapped to the chair in SAW 5. Tobin [Bell] and I spent so much time preparing that scene. We spent a lot of time together thinking of ideas and talking about our characters. It was a great scene, and working with Tobin is always a pleasure.

John: I know you're a big sports fan. What's your favorite sport?

Costas: I love every sport. I'm a huge sports fan. I love playing and watching soccer. I love them all.

John: When you first started playing the character of "Hoffman" in SAW 3, did you ever think this role would become as huge and important as it is now?

Costas: There was talk about it, but I wasn't sure. Now that I'm involved with SAW I understand how it's one of the most influential and important franchises in the world. I'm extremely proud to be a part of the SAW family.

John: Can we do some more word associations? I say something, then you say the first thing that comes to mind?

Costas: Of course. But, can I say more than just one word this time?

John: Sure!

Costas: Okay, go.

John: Tobin Bell ("Jigsaw").

Costas: He's SAW. Extremely talented actor - a wonderful man. Love working with him.

John: Shawnee Smith ("Amanda").

Costas: Lovely, sweet, kind and a real good actress.

John: Kevin Greutert (Director, SAW VI, SAW 3D).

Costas: Terrific director. Knows SAW inside and out. I like him.

John: What’s “Hoffman” like in SAW 3D?

Costas: I really can’t give too many details, but I love the character, and I love playing him. The story for SAW 3D is terrific. It’s a pleasure for me as an actor to be a part of something as special as the SAW franchise. I love SAW 3D. Frankly, I’m having a blast. Like I said before, John, it really doesn’t get better than this. I’m blessed.

This is John Raybin from officialsaw.com with the 1st of our 2-Part Exclusive Interview with Costas Mandylor ("Hoffman").

John: Costas, we first saw you in SAW III...it's now SAW 3D, what's it like playing "Hoffman" for the fifth time?

Costas: John...it doesn't get better than this!

John: What makes working on a SAW movie special?

Costas: It's everything. You can't just name one thing. We all work together, like a team. Many times in the movie business, you know, you do "your" thing on set, that guy does "his" thing... it's like that. When you're working on a SAW movie, it's different. I'll give you an example, many times Tobin [Bell] and I will take a walk together and talk...about the film, about our characters, how our characters relate to others and what we can do to make the story even better. Tobin really cares. I've said it before, but it's worth saying again....and again. The man cares. He works very hard and anyone who's ever watched a SAW movie can see that. The producers and writers and directors are the same way. Mark and Oren [the SAW producers] know the franchise better than anyone because they've been here since the beginning. They got SAW on its feet. They knew how special this thing was before anyone else, and they've stuck by it. I'm very appreciative that they picked me to be in the SAW films.

John: Do you like filming in Toronto?

Costas: I love it. Toronto is a lovely city. It's vibrant and alive. Great place. Great people.

John: The crew on every SAW film loves you. What's your unique bond with them?

Costas: I try and make them laugh. I work hard and I respect each and every one of them. They work so hard and they care. We have the best bunch of people behind the scenes.

John: It sounds like you're living a dream with the SAW films.

Costas: I am. I feel very fortunate that I was picked to be in these films. It's a dream come true.

John: Can we try some "word associations?" I'll say a word, and then you say the first word that pops into your head.

Costas: Okay, sure.

John: Blood.

Costas: Buckets.

John: Strahm.

Costas: Disturbed.

John: Jigsaw.

Costas: A character that has changed the horror world.

John: Sushi.

Costas: (laughing) Where?!

John: Describe the fans of SAW in two words.

Costas: Smart. Fantastic. I've been fortunate enough to meet many of them. Everyone involved with the movies knows how passionate and dedicated the fans are. We all know that we're dealing with a very special group of people. This isn't a group that's going to be entertained by seeing the same stuff twice. That's why each year we have to all work together to raise the bar higher. The fans support us, and we all owe it to them to do the very best we can.

John: What do you think the fans are going to say about SAW 3D?

Costas: I think they're going to be very pleased. Like I said, we know who we're dealing with....these are the fans of SAW, and they deserve the best. I think the film's story is very good, very clever, there's enough story, blood and traps to please the fans, and it's in 3D. I'm excited about this film.

Answer: Absolutely. The producers and the directors - they all listen to what the actors suggest. It's a collaborative effort. You've all heard the stories about how involved Tobin Bell ("Jigsaw") has been....

Question: What's the first thing you did on set this year?
Answer: I was watching a scene being shot (an unusual scene, that fans will talk about for a long time).

Question: What impact will the 3D technology have on this movie?
Answer: It's a huge, positive step. It will take SAW to a different level. Everyone on set is intrigued and fascinated by 3D.

Question: When will I know if SAW 3D is a kick-ass movie?
Answer: You'll know within the first three minutes.

Thursday SAW 3D Set Update

SAW 3D Set Update......Thursday, February 11, 2010 -- Update from the set of SAW 3D in Toronto, Canada. Hi, this is John Raybin of officialsaw.com and collectsaw.com and I'm on the set of SAW 3D...We're getting a ton of emails and phone calls asking me to divulge more about what's happening on set. I'll answer what I can, but most everything is top-secret...Filming today began at 9:30AM.....I sat with Producers Oren Koules and Mark Burg on set watching filming today. Mark and Oren are putting their heart and soul in to this film and it shows.....A key scene was filmed this morning that ran into the afternoon. Lots of violence - and violence that we haven't seen before. Fans won't forget this part of the movie....3D is taking the series to a new level - more cameras, more detail, more everything...Director Kevin Greutert is a trooper. He's feeling a bit under the weather but he's working hard and making things happen....We will get to a lot of questions from fans beginning tomorrow...Stay tuned to officialsaw.com for daily reports from the set of SAW 3D.

Tuesday Update from the Set of SAW 3D

Toronto, Canada - Tuesday, February 9, 2010....this is John Raybin of officialsaw.com and collectsaw.com reporting on the 2nd Day of shooting of SAW 3D. Filming began at 9AM this morning. ....Everyone eats together in the lunch area. Crew and actors. Was joined at lunch by the beautiful Betsy Russell ("Jill")....Betsy is gorgeous. And she has some great lines in SAW 3D...spent a good amount of time looking over the traps today. Two words: "Very Bloody"...3D is the future for all films. The crew is having a good time working with the future of filmmaking....Dan Heffner, Executive Producer keeps everything rolling on set. Lots of comradery and this film is running smoothly....I think this SAW film has more twists than any other. And you won't see them coming. BELOW IS A NOTE FROM "SAW" PRODUCER MARK BURG TO JOHN RAYBIN (OF OFFICIALSAW.COM, OFFICIALSAWSTORE.COM, COLLECTSAW.COM)

John,

"I just got back from Toronto, where we finished the final mix. (Executive Producers) Jason Constantine, Peter Block and myself were all there. The final mix is amazing and this could easily be the best of all the Charlie Clouser scores....I have said it before, but I do believe that this (SAW VI) is the best of all the SAW movies. The movie looks and sounds amazing and I can't wait for the audience to see it."
